On 22 March 2016, three explosions occurred in Brussels, Belgium; two of which were at the Brussels Airport and one on the metro system. Several people are reported to have been killed in the airport explosion with many injured.

The BBC News Channel took BBC World coverage of the attacks from 8am GMT until 9am GMT. BBC Breakfast also carried breaking news coverage. The scheduled Victoria Derbyshire programme was replaced by a BBC News Special, anchored by Joanna Gosling from 9am GMT. The first 15 minutes of this special programme was aired on BBC Two, before it was moved over to BBC One. This news special was also aired on the BBC News Channel and BBC World News. In the afternoon BBC Two also broadcast a BBC News Special between 3.15pm GMT and 5.15pm GMT.

Good Morning Britain
Good Morning Britain began open-ended coverage of the attacks when the news broke. ITV’s schedule was cleared from 9.25am GMT onwards to make way for breaking news coverage. Good Morning Britain came to an end at 10.30am GMT and normal programmes resumed.
