BBC Midlands Today

BBC Midlands Today is the regional news programme covering the West Midlands – including Birmingham, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire and parts of northern Gloucestershire.  Previously, the programme also covered the East Midlands, however this area became a broadcasting region in its own right in 1991, and has since been covered by BBC East Midlands Today.

Midlands Today is now broadcast from The Mailbox in the centre of Birmingham, however between 1971 and 2004 it was broadcast – along with many other daytime networked programmes – from BBC Pebble Mill. Midlands Today has often been the chosen region for testing improvements to regional news provision for the rest of the UK, e.g. the ‘BBC Local TV’ ultra-local news service using the red button, and the 90 second BBC1 updates at 8pm. This is because the BBC English Regions office is at BBC Birmingham.
